Back then it was fun...now it's not. I mean, I'm sure it could still be fun, but I am in a bit more challenging season of life. Right now it is just a million times easier and faster to upload a gazillion pictures to Facebook than to sit down, pick pictures, write about them, etc. I have met some awesome people through blogging and for that, I am very, very thankful, but for now, I am ending this blog. I will keep this blog open in case I have a change of heart or an occasional post that I want to write about. Thanks for reading about our lives for the past four years!!!Peterson Partyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13196563377005692416noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6954250002580277505.post-29626726736405441502012-05-21T21:08:00.000-04:002012-05-21T21:08:20.765-04:00Little House in the Big Woods: Chapter 1 (part 2)Last week and this week, we worked on chapter one of Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Click here to see part one. Several times this week, I overheard the girls playing "Mary and Laura" and Arin thought it was funny to call me Ma and her daddy Pa. We still were not able to get to all the activities that I had planned to go along with this chapter, but I feel like we did enough to move on. Arin has been wondering what will happen in the next chapter, so I think she is ready to move on as well.
In chapter one, the family is preparing their food for winter. We did a page in Arin's Evan Moor science book about things that people eat.

Are you wondering what her drawing is all about? That is an apple, cut into small pieces (Arin's bottom teeth are loose, so she always wants her apples cut into small chunks) and the other picture is a glass of apple juice with water being added to it (yes, I still dilute her juice).

The story tells of a garden growing outside the family's house. It also talks about the different vegetables that have been stored away in the attic. The vegetables mentioned in the story are: pumpkins, squash, red peppers, cabbage, beets, carrots, turnips, onions and potatoes.
We bought seeds for all of the vegetables mentioned, except potatoes, and we made a chart so that we could compare and contrast the seeds. We were amazed at how tiny some of the seeds are!
On Sunday, I let the girls plant these vegetables (except potatoes).
To be honest, I didn't have a lot of faith that these would amount to much of anything. I figured it was the wrong time of the year for most of these to be planted. But, in just a couple of days, some of the plants had started to sprout! By Friday, we had:
Now the dilemma - what are we going to do with these seedlings? The pots are too small to sustain them long term and we live in a rental where digging into the ground isn't really an option. Hmm???

Another food that the Ingalls' family stored away was cheese. It doesn't say what type of cheese, other than "yellow". We took this opportunity to do a cheese taste test. The girls tried sharp cheddar, medium cheddar, mild cheddar and colby cheeses. They liked the mild cheddar and the colby the best.

In the story, Pa goes to Lake Pepin and catches a wagon load of white fish. He fishes with a net. A couple of weeks ago, Andrew and his brother had taken Arin and Ella with them when they went cast net fishing at a nearby lake. Kaelyn and I did not join them on this adventure, so I do not have any pictures of it. Instead, Arin told me about their experience.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">I love fish. Fish are my favorite animals. Fish love me! My daddy went to catch fish one time and we went with him. Uncle Todd carried Ella because she hurt her finger. She cut it on grass.

I was wearing flip flops, so I walked into the water. Daddy went far into the water, away from the shore. He was fishing with a big net that was too heavy for me. He caught four tilapia.

First, he caught a big catfish, then two or three tilapia, then a little minnow! Before he caught the catfish, he thought there was nothing out there, just nothing, no fish!

After he caught the fish, we walked over to the car. While we were waiting to get in the car, Ella and I collected pinecones.

We got home and daddy cut open the tilapia. When he opened it, there was no blood, but it looked so gross!

Arin learned a little bit about fish in her Evan Moor science book. She learned that all fish have gills. Fresh water fish drink water in through their gills, while salt water fish drink water in through their mouths and filter the salt out through their gills.

After Pa caught all the fish, Ma made a big white fish dinner and the rest of the meat was salted and stored in barrels for the winter. Other meat was also preserved for the winter (deer and pig). We worked on a food preserving experiment. We cut an apple into 12 chunks. We placed 2 chunks of apple into each jar (6 jars total). One jar was labeled "control". The other five jars were filled and labeled. We added the following to the jars: salt, sugar, water, vinegar, and baking soda.
This experiment takes about a week to complete. We started on on Thursday, so we have not yet learned which substance will preserve the best. We've been observing the jars everyday. After just 24 hours, the apple in vinegar turned brown (well actually sooner, but that is when I took these pictures) and the sugar had started to break down into a syrup.
Pa smoked the deer meat with hickory chips. We bought hickory chips for the girls to smell. They were not fresh cut, like they were in the story, so they did not have much smell to them. We haven't tried grilling with them yet, but we went out to a barbeque restaurant where the girls tried smoked chicken.
Laura and Mary loved it when their Pa butchered the pig. He blew up the pig's bladder and tied the end shut, making a small white balloon for the girls to play with. Gross, right?? Arin and Ella had fun playing with a white balloon.
As long as they were playing with balloons anyway, I decided to toss in a couple of science lessons. In Arin's science workbook, she learned about solids, liquids, and gases.
In the evenings, after Pa was done with his chores, he would play the fiddle. We enjoyed looking at several YouTube videos of people playing the fiddle. The girls especially liked the videos of little kids their ages playing the fiddle/violin.

Pa would also tell stories to the girls in the evenings. Ella heard this and was excited to make up a story to tell me. This was her story:

There was a beautiful family. Kaelyn was still in mommy's tummy. Uncle Todd came to our house. A little girl named Flowery came to our house. We had some cupcakes for Mother's Day. Flowery had a cupcake. And then, Kaelyn came out of mommy's tummy. And I built a puzzle. Flowery helped me make my puzzle. And mommy had another baby in her tummy! The End
(Just to be clear - mommy does not have another baby in her tummy).

<span style="font-family: Times, "Times New Roman", serif;">While Pa was telling his story, Laura interrupted. She was scolded for interrupting. I pulled out our character cards and the girls memorized it this week.

Chapter One summary (In Arin's words)

This story was about Laura, Mary, Carrie, Pa and Ma. Mary and Laura have dolls. One is made out of a corncob and the other our of rags. The girls slept in a trundle bed. They lived in a house made of logs and had a dog named Jack. When Pa killed a pig, he let Mary and Laura play with the pig's bladder, which was like a balloon. They ate deer meat which is called venison. This story happened in the fall.
Chapter One reading comprehension questions.

I found these reading comprehension questions to go along with each chapter. Arin did chapter one's questions this week.
Lapbook

We will also be putting together a lapbook while reading this book. I will not be using the traditional lapbook format, but we will be using the templates including in two free lapbooks that I found. One can be found here and the other here. Instead of using file folders, I will use cardstock placed in sheet protectors and added to Arin's Little House binder. She worked on the activties that went along with chapter one.

Three things we didn't get to do:

1. I wanted the girls to try venison, maybe in jerky form, but was unable to locate any locally. Andrew does have friends that hunt, so we may be able to try some deer meat in the future.

2. Laura and Mary roasted a pig's tail over fire in their coal burning stove. We did look up coal burning stoves on the internet and we did talk about how they were different than our stove. I wanted the girls to roast hotdogs over an open flame, but that did not happen this week.

3. In the story, Mary had a rag doll and Laura had a corn cob wrapped in a handkerchief for a doll. I really wanted to recreate these for the girls, but we ran out of time.
Peterson Partyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13196563377005692416noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6954250002580277505.post-18886609000009521122012-05-16T08:49:00.000-04:002012-05-16T08:49:01.670-04:00B is for BirdsLetter B's unit study has been slow going. We have been dealing with a lot of sickness around here, plus we took a week long trip to my parents' house after starting this lesson. However, we have finally finished it and are ready to move on to the next letter...Mm.

Ella worked in her Get Ready for the Code book. We allow this book to dictate the letter order we are going in.

I also flipped through Ella's other preschool workbooks and pulled out any bird themed pages in them for her to work on. This gives a fun variety to her worksheets.

When we were at my parents' house, we sat on their back porch and did a little bird watching.
We didn't remember to bring string for this project, so we took the bird feeders outside and laid them on the back porch. We had intended to hang them up once my mom got home, but we never got a chance to do that. I regret not having my camera more handy. Little brown birds came by the dozens and ate all the seeds off of these pinecones. We were happy that we had laid them on the ground where they were easily accessible. It was awesome to watch, but I am sad I didn't get any pictures.
Once we got back to our own home, we made Cheerios bird feeders (an idea I got from Melissa several years ago. Thanks!) They are made simply by threading Cheerios onto pipe cleaners, twisting closed the pipe cleaners and hanging them on a tree. I think Arin enjoyed this project the most and Ella enjoyed snacking on the cereal. She wanted to make it into a cereal necklace for herself :)
I pulled out some of the activities that I used with the girls a few years ago when Arin was working on the letter Bb. Some of these were repeats that Ella had done before and some were new to her because they were things that Arin had worked on in the past. Ella worked on upper- and lower-case recognition.
I had anticipated us reading one chapter per week and doing activities to go along with the story, but...this was a long chapter, full of a lot of information. So, we will contiue this chapter's activities next week as well.
The story begins with Laura describing where she lives. She describes her house, which is a log cabin. We built a log cabin. This actually was more difficult for Arin than expected, so it ended up being mom building a log cabin and that wasn't nearly as much fun as you might think. We bought skills sticks (popsicles sticks made for building) and followed the directions included to make a barn, which we called a cabin :)

Laura described her house, the inside and outside. Arin and Ella drew pictures of their house. Then, Arin described her house to me, including details like house color, what the house is made out of, number of bedrooms, color of the walls, number of stories, etc.
We talked about different kinds of houses. Laura lived in a log cabin, we live in a house, and we worked on an apartment themed map lesson in her Evan Moor Daily Geography book.

Laura described the place where she lived, nothing but woods and the wild animals that live there for as far as the eye can see. Arin described where she lives...neighborhood, paved roads, near lots of other houses, close by family members, stores and restaurants, etc. We also worked on a neighborhood worksheet in her geography book.
The story is set in the state of Wisconsin. I purchased Road Trip USA from Confessions of a Homeschooler. We started this curriculum by learning about Wisconsin. I read facts to Arin about the state, she colored a worksheet (included in the curriculum), located the state on a map, and learned the name of the capital.
Little House in the Big Woods starts in the autumn, with Laura's family gathering food and preparing for the winter. Arin worked on fall themed worksheets in her Evan Moor Daily Science book.

Laura mentions several different animals that have their homes near her home. Arin's science workbook had a section on animals and where they live. Love it when her workbook pages fit in with the books that we are working on. Thanks Michelle for this idea :)

Laura mentions several different animals, both wild and domestic, that live near her. If I remember correctly, she names about 15 different animals, including ones such as wolves, bears, horses, pigs, wild cats, otters, foxes, and a domestic cat and dog. Arin started her animal journal this week, using these animals. This was by far the most time consuming portion of this unit study this week. First, I downloaded (from freedigitalphotos.net) the different animals mentioned in the story (or at least the ones that I could find pictures of). Next, I wrote a simple fact about each of the animals on an index card. Arin used this for her copy work.

We also added artwork for each animal. Here are a few samples of the process, plus the finished journal pages.

Arin drew a wolf, using the instructions found here.

I gave the girls a lesson in symmetry and Arin attempted her first symmetrical drawing.

And some times it just made sense to add a coloring page of the animal as the artwork for that page of the journal.
She was very excited to find out that her daddy's work picnic would be there this year.

The weather was awesome the day that we went, but there were a lot of people there. We were able to see all the shows, but the lines were too long to ride anything, which disappointed the kids. Other than not going on the rides, we had a great time looking at the animals, watching the shows and just being together.
This is a 5k adventure run (it included about 18 obstacles and was run through the mud). They had so much fun and are looking forward to running another one in the future.

Here's a picture of them before the race started. Notice how they are nice and clean :)

Another of their brothers (Matt) was also there. His wife was running that day too.

And here is a picture after the race. Not so clean...

There were lots of areas for the spectators to stay during the race and take pictures and cheer on the racers. I got exactly zero pictures of Andrew and Mike completing the course. Why? After Andy took off running, Matt and I found a spot along the sidelines...and only a couple minutes later, it started pouring down rain! First, we hurried the kiddos and ourselves under a small tent that was set up. The seven of us, plus two strollers just barely fit. And that would have been fine, but of course, it was about that time that Kaelyn decided it was time to eat. So we decided to make a mad dash up to the bathrooms. Matt decided to take his kiddos to the bathroom as well so they would be out of the rain completely. I am sure that we were quite the sight to see...two adults running, with two little kids running beside us and three little ones in two strollers. Did you notice that I said "up" to the bathroom? Yes, it was up a hill and I wasn't sure if I was going to make it. I felt like we were the ones running the obstacle courses!

We stayed outside the bathrooms, under the overhang, while it rained. In case you were wondering, it stopped raining just as Andrew and Mike were finishing their race.

And the kids were cold after getting rained on. Luckily, my girls had started out with long-sleeved shirts and jackets, but they also had short-sleeved shirts too, so they shared their long-sleeves with the boys. Isn't he so cute in pink? Haha!

Despite the rain, which honestly Andy said was better for running, it was a fun event and I hope to participate with him next year!Peterson Partyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13196563377005692416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6954250002580277505.post-35320293841596630722012-04-18T22:35:00.000-04:002012-04-18T22:35:06.904-04:00F is for FlowerWe homeschool year round. Arin has finished her kindergarten year and I have ordered her first grade materials, which she will be starting at the beginning of May. When I ordered her books for next year, I also ordered a few things for Ella's preschool year. Ella loves school and asks for it daily. For this reason, we started her new materials this week, even though Arin is taking a short break. Ella is loving all the one-on-one time and that all the school time is focused on her :)
She started her Get Ready for the Code primer A.

This book starts with the letter F. We chose flowers as our theme this week.
Over a four day time period, Ella completed all of her "f" work in her workbook. She would have loved to do it all in one day, but I have to pace her or she'd be done with the book in a week!

In addition to the above workbook, Ella did the following letter F and flower themed work.

Day One:
Ella worked on flower puzzles. This is Arin's puzzle and it was Ella's first time using it.

She got frustrated that the pieces kept moving, so she asked to use her (much easier) flower puzzle. This puzzle has grooves to keep the puzzle pieces in place and Ella liked that much better.

Day two:
Ella really loves worksheets, so we worked together on a few more of these. She located all the Ff on the sheet and then wrote the letters.

She also matched upper and lower-case letters with this worksheet.

Together, we colored a color-by-shape flower themed worksheet.

I colored the picture on the left and Ella colored the picture on the right :)

Day three:
We took a field trip to our local, public gardens so that we could look at a variety of flowers. We talked about the differences and similarities of the flowers, their colors, shapes, sizes and whether or not they were fragrant.
We also started the classic science experiment, showing how water moves through the flower's stem. We did this by picking white flowers (we have gardenias growing in our yard) and putting them in water dyed with food coloring. We left the flowers overnight, and by the next morning, they were no longer white. Instead, we had a blue flower, a pink one, and a very pale purple flower.
Day four:
Ella worked on a sequencing activities, which also gave her cutting and gluing practice.

She worked on a few more flower themed worksheets.

And finally, we incorporated a little math into the mix. I printed six flowers and wrote numbers 1-6 in the middle of them. Then, I gave Ella plastic linking flowers and a dice. She rolled the dice, counted the dots, linked together the correct number of flowers and placed the chain under the correctly numbered flower. Later, Ella and Arin played this together, each with their own set of numbered flowers and linking flowers. The first person to complete all six chains was the winner.
In addition to teaching the girls why we observe these days, we also pull out some of our favorite unleavened recipes to make during the week. Arin and Ella look forward to eating the store bought matzas, but Andrew has never liked them, so I always make the honey oatmeal unleavened bread that he grew up on. I always look forward to Cherry Cheese Tarts or my all time favorite dessert, Marble-ous Peanut Butter Dessert, which I really should blog the recipe sometime.

A few years ago, Andrew and I decided to also make this week, a special family time, making many memories together. In 2010, we took a road trip. That year was so much fun, but not something we have been able to do again yet. In 2011, we stayed local and did fun activities like strawberry picking, picnics, painting pottery, and going to the zoo.

This year, we once again stayed local.

We celebrated Passover at Andrew's parents' house. Five of his six siblings plus a portion of their families were present, including his sister and niece that traveled down from Illinios. It was great being together and our girls especially loved all the time with their cousins.

On the first Day of Unleavened Bread, we spent the day with Andrew's family. We also spent time swimming.

On the second day, we took the girls on their surprise trip to Weeki Wachee State Park. My uncle and his girlfriend also met us there for the day. On the ride over, it started raining, but by the time we arrived, there was nothing but blue skies and beautiful weather for the day.

We watched the mermaid shows,

took a boat ride down the spring fed river,

We also ate a picnic lunch and Andy hand-fed this peacock.

After our picnic, we took the girls to swim in the springs and play in the sand before heading home.
We went to lunch with Andrew's brother and his wife and afterwards, the girls went swimming. I didn't even take any pictures this day, but we did still have fun being together all day.

The fourth day, we invited three of the girls' cousins over for a playdate. First, there was a movie and popcorn.

We hiked a bit and had a picnic lunch together. We saw lots of wildlife, including an owl and several alligators.
We had a really great week, which went by way too quickly. On a side note, Kaelyn's first two bottom teeth broke through during this week also :)Peterson Partyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13196563377005692416noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6954250002580277505.post-32409075335571180802012-03-14T01:04:00.000-04:002012-03-14T01:04:44.653-04:00Farm Field TripField trips to visit a farm are always a hit with my kids. When we lived in Georgia, we visited a peacock farm and a regular farm with a feed store within months of each other. Today, we visited a produce farm with our play group.

Our field trip was awesome! As an added feature, you can have birthday parties at this farm. Although this was not a birthday party, they were set up to show our kiddos a wonderful time.

First, the kids took a "tractor train" ride (as Arin called it).

Next, they had free time to play on the playground and swing on the tire swings ~ always a big hit!

Then, back to the tractor train which led them out to the field where the kids were allowed to pick strawberries. Ella said this was her favorite part of the day.

My girls also picked onions. This was a great experience for my kids. They have picked strawberries, blueberries, and citrus, all which are very simple to pick, but they really had to work to get the onions out of the ground, which made it even more rewarding.

Then, back to the tractor train.

And over to the playground where the kids were given ice cream. Yum!

After their sweet treat, it was time to get back in the tractor train again. By the way, all the kids loved, loved, loved this, which is why they rode it so often. It was a bit bumpy, so Ella told me it was like being on a roller coaster.

This time, they stopped at the petting farm to feed the animals.

Then, back to the tractor train one last time and the field trip was over. All the kids enjoyed it. My girls have already asked if they can go back again tomorrow!
Last year, we took the girls to pick strawberries. It was such a fun experience that they (Arin especially) have been anxiously waiting for the time to come again to pick more strawberries. That time happened yesterday :)

After picking strawberries, we went back to the park to check on the ducklings. We first found them less than a week ago, when there were 15, now there are only 14. It's amazing how quickly they are growing independent. Last week, the mama duck kept them close by her. This week, they are swimming off, quite a distance from her, as well as going off in different, smaller groups and sometimes on their own. The mama watches from a distance, but flies in close if she senses danger. We've been back to check on the ducklings four times since we first found them. It has been a great learning experience for the girls.
After we finished feeding the hungry birds, we walked for a little while and came upon a mama duck and 15 ducklings! Arin and Ella loved the baby ducks, which came right up to them. We were disappointed that we had no food left for them. So the next day, we went back to the park, this time with a whole box of Cheerios to feed to the ducklings. It was such a fun experience for the girls.
She smiles most of the time, though I have yet to get a picture of it. I get happy pictures, but not her real, big grin, which is so cute. She giggles when she thinks something or someone is funny and she is very ticklish.

All of this is a welcomed change with my little girl. I don't know that I have mentioned it before on my blog, but Kaelyn has been a very fussy baby from about two weeks on.

It started out slow with just fussing at night for a little while. Then, it turned into fussing and crying for five to six hours straight every night. Then, it turned into fussing anytime that she was awake...to the point that I couldn't wait for her to just go to sleep! Then, it turned into her fussing/crying/and screaming, along with some back arching. Then, her bowel movements became extremely foul smelling. She is a 100% breastfed baby, yet her poops did not smell like it and they were not the right consistency (very runny/watery).
I struggled with the results for a while, hoping it wasn't the case, because it would mean a diet change for me. But the symptoms were getting worse and I knew it was time for a change. What were my findings? Kaelyn is sensitive to dairy. This is a fairly common problem for babies. It doesn't mean they are allergic to milk, but that they are sensitive to the proteins in cow's milk...this is different than being lactose intolerant. Kae's doctor and I had discussed this at her one-month check-up, but because she was not spitting up and she was gaining weight, it was dismissed as "probably not the case".

So, I have given up almost all dairy. I am keeping butter in my diet for now, but not eating any other dairy or any other foods containing dairy. The lactation consultant that I spoke with told me that the proteins can stay in my milk for up to two weeks. She told me to go ahead and keep the butter for now, but if her symptoms don't go away, I may have to give that up too.
I have been off dairy for eight days now (Any suggestions for dairy free meals?????). By day two, we had a different child. She was happy and content while awake! What a blessing! Since then, there have been good days and rough days as her body adjusts, but overall, things are going much, much better. I have always loved my baby dearly, but I am able to enjoy her now :)
Since I have removed dairy, Kae is happier and she now does tummy time for longer periods of time without fussing :)
- gets excited to see people
- gets upset if she is ignored
- she's a drooly baby, but not to the point of soaking her clothes - she usually just has some spit bubbles around her mouth
- plays with rattles and other small toys
- stands in her jumpy activity center (not sure what they are called)
- LOVES being outside
- Is still adored by her sisters :)
I sent a request to all of our family and mutual friends on Facebook, asking that they send in a memory or a few memories of Andrew (from any time in his life). I wanted to fill 29 envelopes with these memories. I ended up having 22 people participate in this project, but because some people sent in more than one memory, I was able to fill all 29 envelopes with at least one memory. I didn't give people very much notice with this project, so most emailed me the memories, but we also received a few handwritten memories. Andrew got memories from some of his family, some of mine, an old college buddy, and a few family friends. The memories brought him back to a few moments that he had previously forgotten about and there were some memories that we speak of often. There were LOTS of laughs. Andrew really enjoyed this project. Thank you to everyone that too the time to participate and make Andy's day even more special and thank you to Abigail for the idea!

On this day, I let Andy choose what he'd like as his gift. As it turns out, it was the exact same thing that I had originally planned for him. He chose homemade cinnamon rolls, using his mom's recipe. I have not made them yet, but will in the next day or two.

And so that brings us to Day 29. The final day for this project. Originally, I was going to title it "The Gift of a New Experience" or maybe "The Gift of Flight" but as it turns out, I think I will name it "The Gift of Disappointment" or if I am looking for a positive spin, I could call it "The Gift of Safety". No matter what you call it, it did not work out. Bummer!

I took Andy out to Wallaby Ranch this morning, where we had intended for him to hang glide. But, as soon as we arrived, they said it was too windy and they would not chance it. So, it just didn't work out, but it is something to look forward to. We will try it again in a week or two.

They did not see this as a disappointing trip at all. (and of course, Andy would rather be safe than take a risk)

I had planned going to the movies as one of Andrew's gifts, but last minute decided we'd just rent a movie to watch at home (you know, easier with the baby). The girls and I went to Redbox and picked out the movie. They really wanted to see "Cars 2", but it was out of stock, so we picked "Zookeeper". I set up a blanket on the living room floor and we had a picnic dinner as we watched the movie. I thought, "Ok, it's Kevin James. Andy likes Kevin James. And it's talking animals. The girls love animals and what could be more fun than talking animals? This will be great." Wrong! There were talking animals, but it wasn't really a kids movie. It was "how does the guy win the girl?" kind of movie and the animals give advice. Lame for the adults and too old for a three and five year old. Disappointment, but the picnic dinner was fun :)

Day 26: The Gift of a Favorite Dinner.

One of Andy's favorite meals is Hot Wings. We ordered his favorite take-out wings - enough that he could have them for several meals :)

Day 27: The Gift of the Night Sky

Our local astronomy club hosts an astronomy night once a month, which is open to the public. Andrew loves astronomy, so we signed him up for the class. Andrew and I had gone to an astronomy night once in Hawaii. It was a lot of fun. We looked through the high-powered telescopes at different constellations and what not. I had it in my mind that this would be a similiar event. Nope. There was too much cloud cover, so we did not get to look through the telescopes tonight. Instead, it was a two hour class about different types of telescopes, and looking at pictures of the night sky that some of the members had taken, etc. The good news is that Andrew loved this. He was able to meet some people with similiar interests and he plans to meet with them again. The bad news was that we brought the three kiddos, expecting to let them see the sky through the telescopes, which didn't happen, so it was terribly boring to us. Next time, Andrew will do this by himself, which I am assuming will actually be even more fun for him. No pics of this event, since we were just sitting inside the whole time.Peterson Partyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13196563377005692416noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6954250002580277505.post-74911824566885462782012-01-18T19:57:00.000-05:002012-01-18T19:57:44.660-05:0029 Days for Daddy # 24Day 24: The Gift of Art

One of Arin's favorite acitivities to do is painting. She knew right away that she wanted to paint a "beautiful rainbow" for her daddy.

Ella came up with a few different ideas. She asked me to paint a heart for her. She also thought about painting a dinosaur, but in the end, she decided to paint a picture of her mama :)
I was disappointed that her toes were smudged in this picture and I am debating re-doing it with some help.
Today's activity was all Arin's idea - silly string! It was the first time that my kiddos have used silly string and they sure did have fun spraying their daddy :)

Andrew has always wanted to take a train ride, so that is what we did on this day. We took the train over to the next train stop and back. The trip was about an hour and a half (we never got off the train). We also didn't walk around the train. We did pack a lunch to eat while on board.

We would eventually like to take a more scenic train trip, but this was a lot of fun too. Now Andrew can say that he has taken a train ride :)
This was also all three girlies first train ride.
